Twitter is slowly but surely moving to a solid monetization model. They initiated the same when they launched promoted tweets back in April. Now they have taken a step further and launched Promoted Accounts which is a new ad solutions for brands to get more followers.
What is Promoted Accounts?
Under the right hand side “Suggestions for You” sidebar there will be promoted twitter accounts that will show above the other suggestions. This will only show to people that don’t follow you or your brand id. This feature is a clone of the facebook ads which are frequently used by brands to advertise and attract likes/fans for their pages.

Promoted Accounts are suggested based on a user’s public list of whom they follow so currently there is no demographic feature for targetting available for this. This would also ensure that brands actually follow the correct TG that they want to engage on twitter.
For example, a lot of people who follow several gaming-related accounts also follow @xbox. If someone follows gaming-related accounts, but not @xbox, Twitter may recommend @xbox to that person.
Currently twitter claims to be working with over 40 advertisers – nearly 80% of whom have already become repeat buyers. Only time will tell though as to how effective promoted tweets becomes and whether it can see the success that facebook ads is seeing currently
