Social networking has become the rage even for Fido. He may not be able to type, and has no opposable thumbs to hold a smartphone either, but with a little help from an electronic dog tag that attaches to his collar, he can still Tweet.

The product is called Puppy Tweets. The product launched in limited quantities earlier this year, but it didn’t get its big launch night until Thursday, when Bethenny Frankel, the star of “Bethenny Getting Married?” and one of “The Real Housewives of New York,” hosted the official launch of Puppy Tweets in New York, with her dog Cookie.

Puppy Tweets is from Mattel, which might tell you it’s not meant to be a technological marvel, especially at the MSRP of $29.99. Reportedly, the product detects your dogs’s movements, barks, and other sounds and sends a variety of pre-programmed tweets (500) to a Twitter page you set up for your dog. The product comes in blue or pink.

The frequency of messages is related to the activity level of your dog, but can also be set via the desktop app that must be running on your home PC. Tweeting is done by your PC, which receives signals from the tag on your dog’s collar.

The product’s name, as we said, is Puppy Tweets, but the website is PuppyTweet.com (and PuppyTweets.com doesn’t work, by the way). What else doesn’t work? At least based on the reviews at Amazon.com, the product itself doesn’t work, due to software issues.  To listen to those reviews, the product itself is a dog.

However, spokeswoman Rachel Cooper said that the problem has been resolved. Mattel is also adding 200 free tweets this week to the Tweet message library, which can be downioaded and added. That feature was also noted in the FAQ of the Puppy Tweets website.

Software for your PC which, as we said, is where the Tweets really come from, is available in both Mac and PC versions, here.
